The thermal lake of Hévíz and its complex balneotherapic services are part of the World Heritage List. Indeed, it is the most well-known spa in Hungary’s bath-filled country and not just by accident. The 44,400 m2 surface lake is the second largest lake in the world with peat channel and warm water. In the summer the temperature of the water can reach 38 °C, but it will not fall below 22 °C in the winter, giving you the perfect opportunity to bathe all year round in the open air. The medicinal water here has been mentioned even in 400 years old Ottoman artifacts, and the name of the city itself comes from the word ‘havuz’, meaning Turkish pool. The first spa was built here by Count György Festetics, and the area became popular and visitors from further and further away started coming here regularly. It is interesting to note that beer was an important part of the area’s popularity… at the beginning of the 20th century, the brewer Vencel Reischl recognized the potential of medicinal water and built the foundations of the modern spa resort, creating the ancestor of modern physiotherapy.

Most of the spas are also a monument and a tourist attraction.
The water of the thermal spa of Hévíz is constantly in motion: on the one hand it rotates from left to right, on the other hand, because the warm water flows up and the cold flows down, there is a vertical circulation in the lake too. This two-way movement is a pleasant, natural massage effect when you relax in the spa of Hévíz.

Medicinal water

The water of the 4.4 hectares, 38 meters deep lake comes from a cave. The one-of-a-kind composition of the water and the mud creates unique microorganisms that contribute to the healing power of the medicinal water, especially for the prevention and treatment of locomotive system disorders. The water of Lake Hévíz is a thermal water rich in calcium and magnesium hydrocarbonate, which, due to its rich mineral content, is effective in the treatment of a number of other diseases. During the healing - on the basis of a specialist's recommendation – you could complement bathing in the lake with other healing services: massages, physiotherapy, therapeutic gymnastics, air-therapy, hydro-electric treatments, hydrotherapy treatments and mud packs.

Rudas Bath or Rudas fürdő is a thermal and medicinal bath in Budapest, Hungary. It was first built in 1550, during the time of Ottoman rule. From 1936 Rudas can only be visited by men, and in 2006, after the spa renovation was completed...

Description of the spa city

The thermal water and the city must have something special about them to attract thousands of guests every year while being only 8 km away from Lake Balaton. The remains of the most important Emperor's settlement in the area are in the ground at the Egregy part of Hévíz and it has been populated for almost four centuries; from the beginning of the first half of the first century until the beginning of the fifth century. The recently restored area made of a number of large buildings is opened to the public and it has been reconstructed several times during this long period of use. If you want to explore the neighborhood from an arm’s length, we recommend segway tours for all ages, as you could easily visit all the sights without effort and admire the nature and picturesque landscapes, both in the city and in the forests.

The cherubs guarding the main entrance of the baths will make a sound when a guest passes between them who did not have a romantic moment in Hévíz. That is at least according to the local legend, but it never happened that someone left Hévíz without any heartwarming moments.

Consuming seasonal foods is more and more popular, especially if you prefer delicacies that come from the neighborhood. If you feel like trying some local specialties, visit the Hévíz Producer Market, where you can choose from 800 small farmers' fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses and meats, or if you are lucky enough you might find the special antique or handicraft item of your dreams.

And for the evening program, you could enjoy a glass of fine wine, the Romans have brought the science of vine-growing in this area, which – according to a certificate from 1221 – was preserved by the Hungarians living in the Árpád age. In the evenings, guests looking to have fun can visit the cozy restaurants and wine bars in the vineyards.
